Information on the village of Lochinver in Scotland.

Name from "Ach" - a plain or meadow and "mealvaich" - sandy dunes. (Gaelic)

One of the most beautiful beaches in the North West, unspoiled by the Caravan Park, where for much of the year you can have the beach to yourself, with its clean bright sand and clear blue water. Enclosed by dunes it is a sheltered haven. Porpoises can sometimes be seen in the bay, and minke whales pass out at sea.
The Youth Hostel stands above the Bay looking west.
The journey along Loch Roe to reach Achmelvich can be a bit hair-raising, being very narrow and single track, but it is well worth the effort.
